Activity Description

The Louisiana Purchase was important to the expansion of our country. In this activity you will explore the reasons why we purchased the Louisiana Territory and its affects on our country.




Activity Directions

1. Download the “Note-Taking” document so you understand how to take good notes.

2. Explore the websites and use your Missouri History book to take notes on why we purchased the Louisiana Territory, the process we went through to purchase it and how it affected our country.

3. Using what you’ve learned write an essay about our country as if Thomas Jefferson had not purchased the Louisiana Territory.

4. In your essay be sure to tell what our country would be like if we had not purchased the Louisiana Territory. Tell how it would affect the people in our country and how it will affect our relationship with other countries. Keep in mind who the French might have sold the Louisiana Territory to if we had not bought it.

5. Use the essay planning sheet in the resources to help plan your story.

6. For extra credit include a drawing of what our country might look like if we had not purchased the Louisiana Territory.
