Activity Description

Do you need an excuse to run around? This is it! Just think about what would happen to your reading ability if you spent 10 minutes a day running or doing an exercise routine.




Activity Directions

1. Day 1: Take the beginning reading passage test. (See Resource #1) Be sure to time yourself with a stopwatch as you read. Record your score and time on your log sheet. (See Resources)

2. Day 1: Choose an exercise: running/walking; jumping jacks/push-ups/toe-touches/sit-ups/leg-lifts

3. Day 1: Do this exercise timing yourself for 10 minutes a day.

4. Day 1: Record your heart rate on your log sheet.

5. Day 2: Repeat exercise with timing and record your heart rate.

6. Day 3: Repeat exercise with timing and record your heart rate.

7. Day 4: Repeat exercise with timing and record your heart rate.

8. Day 4: Take the next reading passage test. (See Resource #2) Remember to time yourself with a stopwatch as you read. Record your score and time on your log sheet.

9. Day 4: Write a conclusion about the effect of your exercising on your reading ability. Record this conclusion on your log sheet.

10. Day 5: Do you think a different exercise would have the same effect? You can use the extra Reading Passages to test other exercises on your own!
