In about two weeks the third grade will vote on which plant part is most important. The other third graders will base this vote on information YOU give them. Your information will come from research you are about to do on plant parts. So get ready to learn all about roots and stems and leaves and flowers and fruit so you can plan your “campaign” strategy!
Activity Directions
1. First you need to know a little about plants and what they need. Go to the web activity below (Resource #1) 2. Fill out the "Plant Discovery Journal" with the plant needs and turn it into your producer (teacher, of course). 3. Next you will be assigned a group and you will choose one of the following roles: Research analyst, writes down information; Artist, plans and supervises creation of posters and pictures; Production Manager, keeps things moving, makes sure you have needed supplies, and oversees the technical work. 4. Once you have assigned the four tasks, you will begin to find out about plant parts at The Great Plant Escape linked below. Your producer will assign you a plant part to research. Write down what your plant part does to help the plant on your Discovery Journal. 5. Then you will get back with your group and share this information. You and your group must decide which plant part you would like to nominate for MOST VALUABLE PLANT PART. Turn in your top two choices to your producer with at least three reasons you chose each one. A form for this is provided below. 6. Your producer will then notify you about the plant part you may campaign for. Your group may begin making posters and slogans and poems or songs to advertise your plant part as the most important. 7. Within three days, the other third graders will be given ballots with your plant parts on them. You will be allowed to make speeches, put out your posters, and otherwise publicize your plant part beforehand. 8. Third Graders will vote for the most important plant part.
