Activity Description

Did you know that Missouri is more than just a state in the Mid-West? Missouri is known as the Gateway to the West. How did Missouri get itís nickname?

Learn about Missouri and its incredible impact on Americaís history and celebrate Missouriís birhday along the way.

Problem: The governor of Illinois states that Illinois is the best place to live. Itís rich in history, heritage and is a lot more fun than its close neighbor, Missouri.

Mission: You will take on the role of governor of Missouri. You will be issuing a new campaign stating the ďTop 10 Reasons to Live in MissouriĒ. Your target audience members are the current residents of Missouri and those thinking about moving here.

Create a PowerPoint presentation listing the top 10 reasons why Missouri is such a great state in which to live.




Activity Directions

1. What makes Missouri's history so important? Watch the video, "A State is Born". Describe 3 reasons Missouri is an important state in American history.

2. Rivers helped establish major cities in Missouri. Why are they so important to Missouri's history? View the websites about the Mssouri and Mississippi Rivers. Tell 3 reasons why they are important to Missouri.

3. Famous people don't just live in Illinois, or even in Hollywood! Many famous people have lived in Missouri and have made it a better place. Research a famous Missourian. Describe what he/she did and how it helped Missouri.

4. St. Louis and Jefferson City aren't the only major cities here. Take a visual journey through the state. Choose 3 places you think are exciting places to visit and tell why.

5. Read about the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark. Tell how Missouri was related to the Louisian Purchase and the Lewis and Clark journey west?
