Students engaged in a study of author Mildred Taylor’s books with "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" as the mentor text.  Students focused on comparing themes and characters across books while developing a deeper understanding of the social and historical developments that informed her writing.  Students see how the Civil Rights Movement grew within this context and how the courage of individuals and groups helped to gain the freedoms everyone now enjoys.
