A sonnet is 14 line poem that follows a very specific structure. There are two kinds of sonnets: Italian (Petrarchan) and the English (Shakespearean). Italian ( Sonnets The first, the Italian form, is made up of two parts: an octave (8 line stanza) and the sestet (6 line stanza). The octave is the first part and follows this rhyme scheme:
and the sestet comes second and can follow one of three rhyme schemes:
English (Shakespearean) Sonnets This sonnet has four stanzas: three quatrains (each with a rhyme-scheme of its own) and a rhymed couplet. It is usually written in iambic pentameter, meaning every fifth syllable is stressed. The typical rhyme-scheme for the English sonnet is
