National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards 68 Algebra 68.5.0 Represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols.

68.5.1. develop an initial conceptual understanding of different uses of variables.

68.5.3. use symbolic algebra to represent situations and to solve problems, especially those that involve linear relationships.

68.6.0 Use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships.

68.6.1. model and solve contextualized problems using various representations, such as graphs, tables, and equations.

California Content Standards Mathematics Grades Eight through Twelve Algebra I

5.0. Students solve multistep problems, including word problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step.

9.0. Students solve a system of two linear equations in two variables algebraically and are able to interpret the answer graphically. Students are able to solve a system of two linear inequalities in two variables and to sketch the solution sets.
