Focus: English/Language Arts
Secondary: Science, Technology, Social Studies

Topic:
non fiction study

Themes:
Continent study, Habitats, Internet research, Life cycles, Non fiction Genre, Scanning Skills

Duration:
8 weeks
Summary
Students use the internet as well as other resources to research and become an "expert" on an animal of their choice. They will learn note taking strategies. They will write a book and quiz about that book. They will learn how to scan and upload pictures and documents. They will work collaboratively to create their quizzes and publish them in a class webpage.

Rationale
The vast majority of our students do not have access to technology. We will provide them with experience in this area by teaching them internet research skills and etiquette. They will also learn how to create an internet quiz and how to use a scanner. We will integrate these skills with the existing Writer's Workshop unit so that they will have real world meaning rather than being taught in isolation.
