Invitation

2nd grade students are initially invited to learn new computer skills after the principal asks this class if they would create a calendar of heroic figures for the school.
To begin the study of what /who is a hero, students listen to the story, The Ant and the Elephant by Peet. In this story one by one six different jungle animals get stuck or stranded after they have refused to help another animal that has become struck. When the big jolly elephant comes along, he selflessly helps each animal. When the elephant finds himself in trouble only the little ant comes to help him. Who was a hero in this story? Why were they a hero? What does a hero do? Students will discuss these questions in order to specify 2-3 criteria for what makes a hero.
