My Philosophy My philosophy of learning is that all students have the potential to learn and grow. I believe students have to take some responsibility and ownership of their own learning. My philosophy of teaching is that teachers need to help students grow and reach their potential through various teaching methods and styles. Teachers must set high expectations, give constant encouragement and feedback, and continually try new strategies to help students be successful.
My Community I teach in Greenfield, which is a suburb of Milwaukee. There are about 250 students enrolled at Edgewood. While the majority of students are white, we do have a growing ESL popultion (particularily Hmong and Mexican students). Our ESL population is different than other districts in that there are over 20 different languages spoken by our ESL population. There is a park next to our school. There is also a police department, restaurants, a mall, and factories in our community.
My Environment There are 250 students in my school. Most of the students are white. There is a small, but growing ESL, ED, and LD population. There are about 30 teachers in our building. Programs available at our school include: ESL, ED, LD, Title I reading help, Reading Recovery, Speech, OT, Guidance, and media services. We currently have a full time tech and media specialist at our school as well.
My Roles and Responsibilities I teach 22 third grade students. Just like any other classroom, I have a wide range of abilities. I have 4 ESL students this year, who are 1-2 years behind academically. I also have a few high-achieving students in my room. But most of my students are average to below-average. My class this year seems to be low academically, especially in math.
