Edible Gardens
What do we need to know to plant an edible garden?

Project Overview:

This project introduces second graders to the idea of growing their own food.  The first step in this project is a brief introduction to Victory Gardens in San Francisco, the next step is an exploration of different fruits and vegetables and how they grow.

Rationale:

Many children in the San Francisco Public School System are very far removed from understanding the process of growing fresh fruit and vegetables in any kind of hands on way.  We live in a city where it can be easy to grow food in our back yards, much as they did in the Victory Gardens of World War Two.  By developing an understanding of how to grow our own food, children will be motivated to grow them, and hopefully, to eat them.
