Wonders of the Tropical Rain Forests
What would it be like to be an animal living in the tropical rain forest?

"Green leaves, wet leaves.  The air is hot and steamy.  Everything is moist.  The skies darken and it begins to rain.  It pours on nature’s green umbrella, the tropical rain forest."

--Gail Gibbons, from Nature’s Green Umbrella: Tropical Rain Forests

OVERVIEW

This inquiry-based project is designed for third-grade teachers who wish to incorporate the tropical rain forests into their science curriculum.  Through a strategic sequence of activities and lessons, students will explore this fascinating ecosystem -- who lives there, what grows there, and how it affects our lives.

RATIONALE

When students are able to identify with the animals and humans who live in the tropical rain forests, and when they discover how valuable this diminishing ecosystem is to our lives and to the lives of future generations, they are more likely to take responsibility for its preservation.

DURATION

Approximately two weeks.
