San Francisco Chinese Language Academy for

Summer Students (SF-CLASS)

SF-CLASS, funded by federal government, will offer middle school students a research based, instructional technology infused, high interest, and aural and print rich Chinese language program.  Students will be engaged in an exciting, innovative summer program to learn Chinese.

The Academy will: 

  1. Provide middle school students an innovative Mandarin Chinese program to develop their overall Chinese proficiency by introducing students to a wide variety of high interest Chinese graphic novels, young adultsí literature, songs, and digital books.

  2. Assist students develop their Chinese ability through storytelling, acting, interacting with podcasts, digital storytelling and producing their own Chinese graphical novels.

  3. Motivate students to learn Chinese, change studentsí perception and attitude towards the learning of Chinese, and most importantly, cultivate independent, lifelong learners of Chinese.

Participant:  The Academy is open to current middle school students with high beginning/low intermediate proficiency in Chinese.

Venue: Burk Hall 170, College of Education, San Francisco State University

Time: June 16-July 11, 2008, 9:00am- 1:00pm Monday- Friday

Cost: $15 application fee (non-refundable)* and $35 registration fee* upon acceptance into the Academy. Students will be awarded full scholarship which will cover tuition, instructional materials, and field trip. Refreshments will be provided daily. Upon successful program completion, each student will receive their own ipod. Students must provide their own transportation to SFSU campus.
