Pennies for Peace
How can first graders make a difference in the world?
First graders can make a powerful difference in the lives of others. As this first grade class learns how to identify, count, and use coins in their daily lives, they have also chosen to use the coins they find to enable children half way around the world to go to school. This service learning project credits and quotes directly from the Pennies for Peace website which offers so many resources for teachers. My intention was to use the website as is. I have added my own introductory notes and explained how I applied everything to my situation.

Pennies for Peace is a project of the non-profit organization, Central Asia Institute, founded by Greg Mortenson. Greg is co-author of the #1 NY Times Best-seller, Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School At A Time. I found Greg’s next book, Stones into Schools, even more fascinating than Three Cups of Tea as it filled in more background information, history and culture.
