What are your thoughts about educational technology?

Cynthia Sistek-Chandler is a Professor in the Sanford College of Education at National University (a Private, Non-Profit Institution based in La Jolla, California). At NU she teaches in the Masters of Educational Technology program and is currently the Academic Program Director for Advanced Teacher Practices in Teacher Education. Dr. Sistek-Chandler became a leader in Educational Technology through her 35-year affiliation with Computer Using Educators (CUE) working at the affiliate level in San Diego holding every board position including President. Cynthia has been a contributing member of the CUE and ISTE Conference Planning Committees and has organized many local EdTech focused conferences including a STEM Conference with National University and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Over 600 local high school students and STEM leaders participated in this one of a kind conference. Her leadership with organizations includes: Classroom of the Future Foundation, iVIE Film Festival, the California Learning Resource Network (CLRN), contributing advisor to the Horizon Report, a State and Federal Grant Reviewer, and content writer and professional developer for over 500 school administrators through the AB 75/430 Professional Development at the San Diego County Office of Education. As an award-winning educator, in 2019 she earned the prestigious ISTE and CUE Award for *Making IT Happen* as well as previously earning a Gold and Platinum Disk from (CUE) for her lifetime achievements and service to the educational technology community. In 2014, she received the President’s Professoriate Award from National University and for two years served as a Faculty Fellow for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Sistek-Chandler is a pioneer in the area of online learning where she has designed and taught online courses since 1999. Her ongoing research focuses on the efficacy of online learning in higher education, technology integration across the curriculum, and instructor role in blended and online learning.


Dr. Sistek-Chandler's Ed D is in Educational Technology, jointly from University of San Diego and San Diego State. Cynthia has been teaching EdTech since 1993 and prior to coming to higher ed, taught elementary grades 1 & 2. During the last 20+ years she has actively been engaged in the online teaching community, both for higher education and in K-12 education. A publication Journal of Research in Innovation Teaching, Connecting the Digital Dots with Social Media and Web 2.0 Technologies explores the relationship between learning theory and web-based technologies. Other publications and presentations, Teach, Tutor and Assess with Screen Capture and Recordings (ISTE, 2012) Instructional Design (CUE, 2011), Analysis of Instructional Design (AECT, 2011), Best of Web 2.0Using Screen Capture for Teaching, Training and Learning (CA Consortium for Independent Study, 2011). Dr. Chandler has also researched portals, made comparisons of online learning systems, presented on the topic of authentic assessment and assessment systems, and has conducted trainings on the use of the iPad and integration of technology systems in the online environment. For the last few years, she has been working with NGSS and the application of the Five E Model into the curriculum.

Cynthia is passionate about EdTech! As a board member and Past President for the SD Computer Using Educators Affiliate, she has helped to make connections in the EdTech Community. A member of CUE for over 30 years, awarded the Gold Disk and Platinum Disk and most recently the Making it Happen award from the CUE organization.

The EdTech Community

On the local level, Dr. Chandler is actively involved in iVIE, Classroom of the Future Foundation, and in promoting programs throughout San Diego County and with the San Diego County Office of Education. Over the past decade, she has trained over 500 school administrators in integrating technology into their practice. Keeping current is a challenge but through her recent appointment to the Horizon Report Higher Education Advisory Board, her work on trends continues. (Cynthia served NMC as an advisor, 2013-2015).
