Library in a Box Project
Can students make an impact on world events? Can they make a difference?
Project Overview

Library in a Box 2009 for Samoa took a little over 4 weeks or media center weekly visits to complete.

After hearing about the disaster on the local news, we also heard of a group at the 1st Samoan Church in San Francisco that was collecting items to send to Samoa. We found out that there was going to be an educational initiative to rebuild the schools in Apia, Samoa and American Samoa so we went to work to create our Library in a Box project to add to the initiative.

Students donated books from home for the project and sorted them into categories, themes, and series they have been learning about in Media Center.

They formed teams to work collaboratively together to develop at least one box by each team for the project.

Students completed a pocket planner of information about the box, listed titles, discussed the books, picked slogans and poetry to decorate the box with, and even developed original slogans for the project.

They wrote a letter of encouragement and took team pictures.

They mod-podged their boxes with colorful papers, trimmed slogans and poetry.

When dry, they added their boxes to the growing display of boxes.

We will have collected over 1500 books and created over 120 boxes when we are finished with the project.
