Thinking Locally Grows Local Acts
Organic Opportunities at LLA
Overview

The Organic Opportunities class maintains an 8,000sq foot organic garden in the backyard of Life Learning Academy.  The garden has 25 raised beds which totals about 1,500sq feet of cultivated space, 20 fruit trees, and a student-built greenhouse.  Surrounding the edibles is a California Native Plant area and several perennial flower borders.

All food grown in by the Organic Opportunities class is distributed to local families through a low-income Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) or prepared and consumed by Life Learning Academy students.

The Organic Opportunities curriculum blends organic agriculture techniques, food system education, health education, and service learning projects into a course that brings inner-city youth outside to experience the foods they consume.
