What is ADHD? How can I know if a student has ADHD?

These questions are just two of many that educators are constantly struggling with. This page will give a brief overview of some important points that will aid in understanding students with ADHD.

How can I know if a student has ADHD?

The following guidelines were developed by School Psychologists, Clinical Psychologists, Researchers, and Neurologists. They are used by most doctors and families as guidelines for understanding the disorder.

INATTENTIVE


A Child who has ADHD with Inattentive tendencies will likely display at least six of the following characteristics:
  • Has difficulty following instructions
  • Has difficulty keeping attention on work or play activities at school and at home
  • Loses things needed for activities at school and at home
  • Appears not to listen
  • Doesn’t pay close attention to details
  • Seems disorganized
  • Has trouble with tasks that require planning ahead
  • Forgets things
  • Is easily distracted

IMPULSIVE


A child who has ADHD with Impulsivity will likely have at least six of the following characteristics:
  • Fidgety
  • Runs or climbs inappropriately
  • Can’t play quietly
  • Blurts out answers
  • Interrupts people
  • Can’t stay in seat
  • Talks too much
  • Is always on the go
  • Has trouble waiting his or her turn

HYPERACTIVE

A child that has ADHD with Hyperactivity will likely have at least six of the following characteristics:
  • Fidgety

  • Can’t play quietly

  • Can’t stay in seat
  • Talks too much
  • Is always on the go
  • Has trouble waiting his or her turn

THESE SYMPTOMS MUST PERSIST FOR LONGER THAN SIX MONTHS FOR THEM TO BE CONSIDERED DIAGNOSABLE.
