Bill of Rights
What are your rights as a US citizen?
Eighth Amendment
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

What does this mean?

The government canít make you pay more than is reasonable in bail or in fines, and the government canít order you to have cruel or unusual punishments (like torture) even if you are convicted of a crime.
