  • Bring in pizza from five different pizza parlors.  Have the students sample from each establishment.  Discuss which were the best/worst, and why.

Ice Cream Hook

  • Bring in strawberry, vanilla and chocolate flavors from five different ice cream palors.  Have the students sample from each establishment.  Discuss which were the best/worst, and why.

Library Hook

  • Take a short field trip to a nearby public library.  Have the students interact with a librarian, and give them ample time to explore the facilities.  Compare and contrast the public library branch to the library at school.  Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each.

 

The bottom line: 


Students have to start with common experiences before they can equally participate in a discussion about "bests" and "worsts."
