How Bikram Yoga Came to Fruition

      In 1973 Bikram Choudhury was invited to the US by President Nixon and from that invitation he has become the “most prominent yoga teacher” here. Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram was a young yoga enthusiast by the age of four under the wings of the “most-renowned physical culturists, Bishnu Ghosh,” at Ghosh’s College of Physical Education, he practiced yoga anywhere from 4 to 6 hours a day. This dedication was validated when he won the National India Championship at the age of 13 for three years straight and proceeded to retire as the All-India National Yoga Champion.

     Bikram’s athleticism was almost short lived when at seventeen he severely injured his knee while weight lifting and had a very dismal prognosis from doctors that sated he would never walk again. Bikram went on to defy what was thought and went back to Ghosh’s school and was fully recovered within six months.  Infinitely proving Ghosh’s thoughts on yoga and being the ‘first to scientifically document its ability to cure chronic physical ailments and heal the body.”  Later in life Bikram went on to formulate what is known as Bikram Yoga, a 26 postures sequence that can be practiced by anyone regardless of age. Bikram Yoga is known for healing the body and mind and has been proven to do this throughout the world and is only taught by those that have certified to do so.
