Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain, in 1881. His father was an art teacher and wanted Picasso to become a great artist one day. It is said that young Pablo’s first word was "piz", short for "lapiz", which is Spanish for pencil. Picasso enjoyed art but did not enjoy school. He was often in trouble with his teachers and spent much of the school day drawing. The painting below is one of Pablo Picasso’s first. He painted it when he was just 9 years old. That’s the same age as many third grade students!
