It's A Keto Life
Understanding the Keto Diet and How it Can Help You

It's a Keto Life is for anyone who is looking for information on the ketogenic diet and it's benefits. The goal is to help you understand how the diet works, what it's benefits are and the science behind the diet that makes it work.

The ketogenic diet is a high fat, moderate protein, and low carb diet that leads to weight loss by putting the body into a metabolic state known as ketosis. This process creates ketones which becomes the body's main source of energy thus causing weight loss by burning stored fat on the body.

What is Ketosis?

During carb and sugar starvation, the human body passes through various phases of metabolic adaptation to prevent muscle protein breakdown and draw on the energy reserves of body fat. For nearly 100,000 generations humans burned fat because they ate a mostly vegetable and meat diet with very little carbs. Today with the addition of carbs along with a diet heavy in process foods, glucose gets stored as fat and humans have become unhealthy and overweight.

During the ketogenic stage, skeletal muscle and other tissues progressively switch energy source from glucose to free fatty acids generated from triglyceride breakdown. There is increased oxidation of fatty acids in the liver, with increased production of the water-soluble ketone bodies acetoacetate and β -hydroxybutyrate. Ketone bodies can be used as an alternative fuel by many tissues, especially the brain, as unlike fatty acids they are able to pass across the blood–brain barrier. Blood ketone-body levels will continue to increase because the body is being starved of carbs and sugar. So the brain adapts to them as its primary energy source.

Fat burn vs. Sugar Burn

The basis of the Keto Diet is burning your body’s stored fat vs. burning sugar or glucose. When your body burns glucose which comes from carbs and sugars the fat gets tucked away in parts of the body you’d rather it not be such as your stomach, hips, and thighs. The more extra glucose your body stores, the more it turns to fat and the heavier you become. The Keto Diet basically reverses this process and encourages your body to burn the fat instead
