Planning Collaboratively
How do you improve mathematical discourse?
Math Conversations at Harriet Thompson

Teachers at Harriet Thompson Elementary School (HT Team) in the Grandview, Washington, are creating and documenting a process to improve student mathematical discourse called ‘Math Conversations’.

Using various strategies, students collaborate within groups to solve math problems by using protocols designed by the HT Team.  Also, students videotape Math Conversation groups, which provides the students opportunities to critically analyze these ‘Math Conversations’. The students take ownership of the process, which makes the learning more meaningful for each student. Having the students view the ’Math Conversations’ provides them with an exceptional opportunity to collaborate and evaluate student work.
