My Philosophy
I want to make a difference in children's lives especially children who live in poverty. I remember my sixth grade teacher who made me feel important and that I could be someone special. In Baton Rouge, I might be the only adult some of my students may see during the day. I like to make a safe and open environment for my students so they feel comfortable enough to say what they believe. I am lucky to have access to technology and the Internet and know that this technology will motivate students to want to learn.
My Community
Baton Rouge is an urban community with a diverse ethnic population. There are a few local family-owned businesses in the area. A new shopping center opened near the school with several large chain stores such as Starbucks and Office Depot. The Museum offers educational programs for schools and exhibits that align with the state standards. There is a wetlands program with the local water company.
My Environment
More than 78% of my students are on free and reduced lunch. The demographics of the school includes 75% African American, 22% Creole, 5% Asian and Pacific Islander, and 13% Caucasian and other. Even though we are a private K-8 school, our students qualify for several federal programs such as Title I and EETT. We are connected to the Internet in all of the classrooms, library, and labs. Each classroom has at least 3 computers. There are 420 students, 14 teachers, 3 instructional assistants, one librarian, one headmaster, a lower school director and middle school director.
My Roles and Responsibilities
I teach all subjects in a self-contained classroom for 6th grade. This year I have 29 students with varying levels.
