Lesson Title: Energy efficiency costs |
Abstract: |
We are studying the costs of different energy sourses in terms of their economical advantage to the consumer. We will gather up-to-date information using the internet. |
|
Suggested Grade Level: 7 |
Estimated Lesson Time: 3 hours, 0 minutes |
Academic Preparation: |
Compare the cost of various energy sources:
Wind power vs. electric vs. solar
|
Standards: |
- Mathematics(7): Big Idea 3: [MA.7.A.3] Develop an understanding of operations on all rational numbers and solving linear equations.
- Mathematics(7): Supporting Ideas: [MA.7.S.6] Data Analysis
|
Objectives: |
- (1) Student will be able to access up-to-date information using the internet. (2) Students will be able to generate bar graphs from a word problem.
|
Procedures: |
- (1) Students are presented with a problem of comparing energy sources.
- (2)Divide the students into three groups. Group #1 Solar Energy Group #2 Wind Energy Group #3 Electricity
- (3)Each Group will be divided into subgroups to investigate the following: (a) Initial costs to set up their energy source. (b) Maintenance costs for their energy source. (c) Average monthly energy bill. (d) Determine the cost per kw/hr.
- (4)Class come together to create bar graphs for each category mentioned in item #3.
- (5)Class discussion of results.
- (6) Students will use the computers to express their results.
