Lesson Title: Energy efficiency costs
Abstract:
We are studying the costs of different energy sourses in terms of their economical advantage to the consumer. We will gather up-to-date information using the internet.
Suggested Grade Level: 7
Estimated Lesson Time: 3 hours, 0 minutes
Academic Preparation:

Compare the cost of various energy sources:

Wind power vs. electric vs. solar

Standards:

  • Mathematics(7): Big Idea 3: [MA.7.A.3] Develop an understanding of operations on all rational numbers and solving linear equations.
  • Mathematics(7): Supporting Ideas: [MA.7.S.6] Data Analysis
Objectives:
  • (1) Student will be able to access up-to-date information using the internet. (2) Students will be able to generate bar graphs from a word problem.
Procedures:
  • (1) Students are presented with a problem of comparing energy sources.
  • (2)Divide the students into three groups. Group #1 Solar Energy Group #2 Wind Energy Group #3 Electricity
  • (3)Each Group will be divided into subgroups to investigate the following: (a) Initial costs to set up their energy source. (b) Maintenance costs for their energy source. (c) Average monthly energy bill. (d) Determine the cost per kw/hr.
  • (4)Class come together to create bar graphs for each category mentioned in item #3.
  • (5)Class discussion of results.
  • (6) Students will use the computers to express their results.
Assessment:
(1) Ability to find assigned information.
(2) Ability to create bar graphs.
