Dragonwings Research
What was happening in San Francisco at the turn of the century?
The 1906 Newspaper
Students were put into groups  of 5-6 chosen by the teacher.   They were to choose an editor and an assistant editor and then they were to choose which topic they were going to research and write about (1 topic per student was mandatory).  During this time we had a discussion of what the job of the editor was to entail.

Topic choices were:
  • 1906 earthquake
  • Chinese in America
  • Wright Brothers
  • Earthquakes
  • Angel Island
Extra credit was given for:
  • letters to the editor
  • want ads
  • comics
  • dress of the day
  • Dear Abby
  • horoscopes
Students were to use a variety of research material from our library and from the Internet.

After their note taking was completed, they were to type their work,  and to make it newspaper size, they were to cut and paste their articles and pictures onto large 12 x 18 size paper.

NOTE:  The editor had an important job, and for the most part, they were the ones who seemed to have the most work to do.  Many groups worked outside of the classroom to finish their project.
